Importers and exporters will go for the payment options that are in their favour when settling international trade transactions. Payment in advance would benefit sellers, while buyers would normally prefer open account. Other payment options such as documentary collections and Letters of Credit may involve different factors for consideration. This workshop will introduce various payment options, explain the risks involve, and provide practical notes and advices for all parties concerned.

Target Participants:
This course is suitable for people engaging in purchasing, sales and marketing, logistics/shipping, and finance/accounting.

Course Outline:
1. What are the important factors to be considered when choosing a payment option in an international trade transaction?
2. Recognize the risks of payment options to buyers and sellers. How to minimize or avoid risks?
3. Documentary collections and Letters of Credit processed by banks are quite different in operation. What should be noted when applying them? What are bank charges and relevant banking documents required by these payment options?
4. On consignment sale is a common payment option in international trade. How is it different from Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), another popular payment option being used? What should buyers and sellers pay attention to when applying these payment options?
5. Both open account and payment in advance incur risks to importers and exporters. How could users obtain the biggest protection without the need to handle numerous banking documents when applying these risky payment options?

Irene is a logistics professional with over 20 years' experience in shipping and letter of credit operation for multi-national companies. Her clients include P&G, Nestle, Cadbury, Philips, General Electric and McDonald's. She is a "Certified Logistician Trainer" and a "Certified Trainer of ITC International Purchasing and Supply Management". Irene is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong ("CMILT") and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in Logistics and Transport ("MHKIE").
