Hong Kong – A New Era

“Hong Kong always bounces back!” stated HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee in his keynote address at the Chamber’s 23rd Hong Kong Business Summit on 10 May, held under the theme “Hong Kong – A New Era.” He was joined by top Government officials and leading business minds who converged at the summit to discuss how Hong Kong, as an international financial and business centre, can adapt amidst the changing geopolitical environment, and reinvent its traditional pillar industries to serve as new engines of economic growth.

Chamber Chairman Betty Yuen kicked off the event, and welcomed HKSAR Financial Secretary Paul Chan, who delivered the opening keynote address. He said we have been through three and a half very difficult years, and while economic growth is important to us, it is important that the community also feels good and has a positive spirit and smiles. “I appeal to you all: do participate, and bring more positive energy to the people around you, and the community,” he told the full-house.

Two panel discussions focused on “Hong Kong's Future as an International Business and Financial Hub” and “Traditional and New Drivers of Hong Kong's Economy.” Distinguished speakers from a broad cross-section of Hong Kong’s business elite and regulators gave us plenty of food for thought. We will have a full report in the June issue of the Bulletin, so look out for this bumper issue.

We would like to thank all speakers and guests who attended and helped to make the summit such a success, especially the 15 HKGCC companies who sponsored the summit, namely: Platinum Sponsors: CLPJardine Matheson; and Sino Group. And Gold Sponsors: Bank of China (Hong Kong)Chevalier Group; CK Group; EYHSBCMayer BrownMTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司NWS Holdings LimitedSun Hung Kai Properties LimitedSwire PacificWheelock and Company Limited; and Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium Limited.

Some of the world’s most forward looking business minds discussed at the 21st Hong Kong Business Summit on 3 November how we can harness the opportunities that digital disruption creates. Trail blazer Alibaba’s Joseph Tsai revealed that 78% of all their transactions today are done with mobiles, so m-commerce has already arrived. HKTV’s Ricky Wong said online shopping tickles people’s buy button finger so encourages them to buy things they would not in a physical store. Uber’s Chief Advisor and former Barack Obama advisor David Plouffe explained how ride sharing frees up roads and real estate, improves the environment and is also changing the way we view cars and commuting. WeLab’s Simon Loong revealing that users of FinTech are higher earners than traditional bank customers, so the perception that only youngsters looking for small loans use FinTech is totally wrong.

Stephen Ng, Chairman, HKGCC, Nicholas Brooke, Chairman, Professional Property Services Limited, Allen Fung, Executive Director & CEO of Non-property Businesses, & Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, and Ronald Lee, Head of Private Wealth Management (PWM), Asia Pacific & Goldman Sachs (Asia), discussed how Hong Kong stacks up against our neighbours and if we are we still the Pearl in the Pearl River Delta crown.
