Hong Kong's insurance industry has grown enormously in the past decade. The independent Insurance Authority took over the regulatory functions of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, which was a Government department, in June 2017.

The Insurance Authority's first Chairman Dr Moses Cheng has an extraordinary job: playing the dual role of regulator and market facilitator. The Authority strives to pursue new opportunities for the insurance industry in Hong Kong, and also facilitate the sector's sustainable development. At the same time, infrastructure projects stemming from the Belt and Road Initiative and the Greater Bay Area development will further boost demand for related insurance policies, leading to more work for the sector.

How should the industry tap into this wave of new opportunities in Mainland China? What challenges does the Insurance Authority face? What are the Authority's priorities? Dr Cheng will address these issues at a talk as part of the Chamber's "Town Hall Forum Series" on 7 January, 2019.

Dr Cheng is the Consultant of a law firm, after having served as its Senior Partner for over 20 years. His areas of practice cover capital markets, corporate governance, regulatory, and compliance. He has been actively contributing to the community and is currently a member of the Financial Leaders Forum. He has also served in various important positions, including Chairman of the Education Commission, government-appointed Director on the Board of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, and founding Vice-Chairman of the Estate Agents Authority.
