Moderated by Terence Wong, Head of APAC 5G Industry & IoT at GSMA, the event featured discussions with Elsa Wong, Managing Director of NEC Hong Kong, Stephen Tsang, Chief Revenue Officer at NTT Com Asia, and Chung Ng, Head of Technology & Strategy at PCCW.
The panellists explored critical advancements and new features of 6G, such as improved data latency rates, ubiquitous connectivity, integrated sensing networks, and enhanced energy efficiency.
The seminar also delved into the potential for new business-use cases and applications in IoT, robotics, autonomous vehicles, AI and immersive augmented reality, highlighting the key steps governments and businesses must take to facilitate a smooth transition to 6G.
Additionally, the discussion highlighted Hong Kong’s strategic role and the key elements necessary to foster a thriving local and global 6G ecosystem.

 | | On 27 August, members of the Innovation, Data and Communications Committee visited the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) as led by Fred Sheu, Committee Chairman. The event provided a deep dive into the HKPC’s advances in ‘new industrialisation’, including smart manufacturing, green technology, and digital transformation. Members were welcomed by HKPC’s Executive Director Mohamed Butt and Chief Marketing Officer Karen Fung, while Chief Ambassador Betty Fung and her team guided members through their state-of-the-art facilities. These included the Future Manufacturing Hall, which featured ‘new productive forces’ technologies driving flexible and sustainable production, and the Advanced Materials and Intelligent Manufacturing Centre, which promotes technological upgrades and business diversification for Hong Kong’s manufacturing sector.

 | | The proposed enhancements to Hong Kong’s Copyright Regime were the focus of a seminar on 30 July that was hosted by HKGCC, the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham) and the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS).
The discussion delved into the potential introduction of a text and data mining (TDM) exception and its implications for the city’s artificial intelligence (AI) development. Andy Lam, Deputy Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development, and Thomas Tsang, Acting Director of Intellectual Property, provided valuable insights into the Government’s vision and roadmap for the copyright reform.
The panel discussion, moderated by Committee Chairman Fred Sheu and Bryan Ha, co-chair of the AmCham Innovation and Technology Committee, examined the essential balance between encouraging innovation and safeguarding intellectual property. It was interesting to hear the viewpoints and insights shared by panellists Ling Ho, Partner, Clifford Chance; Alfons Futterer, Advisor of HKCS AI Specialist Group and Managing Director, NanoMatriX Technologies Limited; and Timothy Tam, Associate Director, CEO Office, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The event ended with a lively Q&A session where stakeholders provided feedback on the upcoming regulatory changes, emphasizing their importance for Hong Kong’s role as a global I&T hub.

 | | Lillian Cheong, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry, shared valuable insights into the latest developments of the Hong Kong Park within the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone on 19 May. Speaking at the committee meeting, Cheong highlighted the mission to establish a world-class innovation and technology hub that connects Hong Kong with the Mainland and the rest of the world. Her presentation also covered the Government’s progress in expediting the Hong Kong Parks’ Phase 1 development, as well as strategic plans to promote cross-boundary flow of innovation elements, including personnel, materials, capital and data.

.jpeg) | | The Chamber and Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) jointly organized a study mission to Germany and France from 30 March to 5 April. The six-day mission aimed to explore innovation ecosystems, foster international business and trade ties, and facilitate knowledge exchange in strategic sectors.
The delegation, led by the Innovation, Data & Communication Committee Chairman Elsa Wong, gained insights into pioneering technological and industrial advancements in Germany and technology ecosystems, local chambers, and leading industrial organizations in France. The mission reinforced the importance of global collaborations, knowledge exchange, and innovation-driven growth, with a focus on Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and sustainable solutions.

.jpg) | | We held an insightful seminar and helpdesk session on how patents can unleash HK businesses’ potential on 20 February.
An expert team of speakers from the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) – including Mia Wu, Senior Consultant of IP Management; and her colleague Cody Yip, Associate Principal Consultant of IP Management, shared on latest trends in the patent landscape of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA), whilst participants gained practical tips in the investment and commercialisation of such IP. We also gained a preview of the holistic range of services offered to businesses by HKPC through their soon to be established Technology and Innovation Support Centre, as well as the benefits of the Patent Application Grant to support patenting efforts and innovation and drive Hong Kong’s development as an IP trading hub.
