Proposed Enhancements to Hong Kong’s Copyright Regime
The proposed enhancements to Hong Kong’s Copyright Regime were the focus of a seminar on 30 July that was hosted by HKGCC, the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham) and the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS).
The discussion delved into the potential introduction of a text and data mining (TDM) exception and its implications for the city’s artificial intelligence (AI) development. Andy Lam, Deputy Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development, and Thomas Tsang, Acting Director of Intellectual Property, provided valuable insights into the Government’s vision and roadmap for the copyright reform.
The panel discussion, moderated by Committee Chairman Fred Sheu and Bryan Ha, co-chair of the AmCham Innovation and Technology Committee, examined the essential balance between encouraging innovation and safeguarding intellectual property. It was interesting to hear the viewpoints and insights shared by panellists Ling Ho, Partner, Clifford Chance; Alfons Futterer, Advisor of HKCS AI Specialist Group and Managing Director, NanoMatriX Technologies Limited; and Timothy Tam, Associate Director, CEO Office, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The event ended with a lively Q&A session where stakeholders provided feedback on the upcoming regulatory changes, emphasizing their importance for Hong Kong’s role as a global I&T hub.
