This workshop will equip you to finetune the tone of your writing to meet the needs of different audiences, subjects, and contexts.

Content:
• The do’s and don'ts of email writing
• Impact of relationship, subject, and context on tone with Scollon & Wong Scollon’s Cooperative Theory
• The language to be used to manipulate tone – writing on sensitive issues
• Intercultural communication considerations such as the politeness vs formality issue and Grice’s Maxims - practicality vs ‘fluff’

Learning Outcomes:
This workshop will enable you to:
• consider the effect tone can have on your audience’s perception and subsequent reaction
• produce emails that create positive relationships and achieve their goals
• adapt language to suit the situation

Richard Charles, Writing Consultant, Connect Communication

Richard is a consultant who specializes in providing support, coaching and training in workplace communication and business writing. With over 30 years of experience in Hong Kong and mainland China, Richard holds a Master’s Degree in English for the Professions (Distinction), with a dissertation on workplace writing in Hong Kong. He has worked with a diverse range of clients including Cathay Pacific, CLP, DLA Piper, Hong Kong Clearing & Exchanges, Hong Kong Land, IBM, Li & Fung, Marks & Spencer, Moody's, ICAC, The Peninsula Hotel, Standard Chartered Bank, as well government departments such as the Legislative Council, the Monetary Authority and the Treasury. Richard is also a TESOL-approved examiner for the University of Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC), the International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) and the Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) examinations.

Notes - Bookings are only confirmed upon receipt of payment, on a first come first served basis.
- Booking transfer is allowed for corporate members with advanced notice, walk-ins are normally not accepted.
- The Chamber reserves the right to decline any booking or cancel the event. In such case, a full refund of the participation fee will be issued.
- No refund will be made for last minute cancellations or no-shows. If the booking is cancelled at least 7 days before the event, and in such cases the refund will be subjected to a 10% administration fee, or HK$100 deduction, whichever is higher.
- A $50 handling fee per person will be charged for all offline bookings (e.g. fax, e-mail, post) for all Chamber events. Go online today by downloading our app or registering on the HKGCC website to save the environment and money.
- Priority is given to corporate members. The decision to accept or decline any booking shall be at sole discretion of the Chamber.
