Hong Kong law provides powerful protection to consumers who are unhappy with their suppliers of products and services. This can result in heavy penalties for businesses that breach the law, most notably under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO). Six years have passed since the TDO was strengthened, by introducing new criminal offences for six types of conduct:

• False or misleading descriptions of services
• Misleading omissions
• Aggressive commercial practices
• Wrongfully accepting payment
• "Bait" advertising
• "Bait and switch" tactics.

What practical lessons can businesses learn from the experience so far, in terms of future compliance? This workshop is designed for business executives who wish to learn more about how to steer clear of trouble under the TDO. The format will consist mainly of interactive discussions and case studies, to keep the focus on real-life issues that businesses might be faced with. It should be of interest to any consumer-facing business in Hong Kong.

Speaker(s) Bill Brown, Senior Consultant, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce
Bill has over 30 years' work experience in the field of law and economic regulation. His previous roles included being a partner in a major commercial law firm, an in-house counsel to companies, and working for regulatory agencies, including as a Chief Executive of one of them.
