An important aspect of the Outline Development Plan is to develop the Greater Bay Area into a cluster of smart cities by promoting interconnectivity in electronic payment systems across the region. To this end, financial institutions and payment solution providers have started offering cross-border payment solutions to make it more convenient for Hong Kong residents to travel to and work in the Mainland.

Examples of seamless payment options include multi-currency payment services offered by e-wallet operators such as AlipayHK and Tap & Go. Hong Kong residents can also open a mainland-based account without leaving town, thanks to a pilot programme operated by Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK).

To enable members to better understand these new developments, the Chamber has invited senior executives from AlipayHK, BOCHK and HKT to introduce their initiatives, which are making cross-border payments simpler and more customer-friendly.
