Hong Kong's flourishing biotech sector helped Dr Ricky Chiu make the decision to establish the headquarters of PHASE Scientific here in 2017. The company, which focuses on diagnostic tools, was initially launched in the United States.

Government support and strong momentum in start-up development have also helped to attract numerous biotech projects to the city, which is home to world-class talent including Prof Yuen Kwok-Yung, an expert on infectious diseases; Prof Nancy Ip, the first Chinese winner of the L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in life sciences; and Prof Dennis Lo, the inventor of non-invasive DNA-based prenatal testing.

Another factor in Hong Kong's appeal is that biotechnology is one of the key growth technologies in Mainland China, where demand is soaring.

Chiu believes that rapid point-of-care diagnostics can change people's attitudes towards self-care management. More importantly, the development of disease can be slowed or prevented, and earlier intervention can help reduce the burden on the healthcare system.

To learn more about Hong Kong's biotech development and start-up environment, the Chamber is arranging a visit to PHASE Scientific with the opportunity to meet Dr Chiu on 22 November. Limited places are available, so don't miss out!

Speaker(s) Ricky Chiu, CEO of PHASE Scientific
Ricky Chiu is the CEO and founder of PHASE Scientific, and lead inventor of the company's underlying technology. Prior to PHASE Scientific, he was a project manager at Alere (now Abbott), where he took several rapid point-of-care diagnostics from concept to market. Among his most successful products is the first FDA approved drug-of-abuse diagnostic using oral fluid.

Chiu pursued his PhD in bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, with a focus on cutting-edge diagnostics development. His doctorate research led to the invention of a revolutionary sample-preparation technology that can improve the sensitivity of most diagnostic tools. Chiu founded PHASE Scientific in 2014 with the goal of commercializing his invention. Since then, he and the company have been the recipient and grants and awards, including from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In the past five years, Chiu has successfully raised over US$14 million in funding from governments, non-profit organizations and investors. Currently, PHASE Scientific has more than 45 patents granted or filed, and operations in the U.S., Mainland China and Hong Kong.
