My term as the Legislative Council Representative for the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce will end on 31 December, and this is my final column for the Bulletin in my capacity as a LegCo member.
Hong Kong has gone through ups and downs during my 21 years as the Chamber’s Legislative Council representative. Businesses suffered a significant blow during the SARS epidemic in 2003, followed by the 2008 financial crisis. The 2014 Occupy Central movement and the 2019 social unrest further affected various industries and people’s lives. Then came the Covid-19 pandemic. Its effects persisted for three years, causing serious economic setbacks.
In recent years, the changing geopolitical environment – in which Hong Kong is navigating tariff wars and other challenges – has been a period I have experienced alongside the Chamber and the business community.
But every cloud has its silver lining. Hong Kong has entered a new chapter focused on moving from stability to prosperity. Despite global political and economic uncertainties, the people of Hong Kong are renowned for their adaptability and resilience. I am confident we can overcome these challenges and find a way forward by leveraging our strengths.
Given the geopolitical and trade uncertainties, the Government has led numerous missions to Europe and to emerging markets, including ASEAN and the Middle East. These delegations included representatives from various chambers and industries seeking opportunities for cooperation through exchange. These efforts are gradually bearing fruit, with large foreign enterprises establishing a presence in Hong Kong and local businesses securing commercial opportunities in these markets.
On the domestic front, the Northern Metropolis serves as the new engine for future economic and industrial development. The project has advanced from the planning stage to a new phase involving implementation, construction and investment promotion. I have been actively engaged in attracting businesses, understanding the needs of investors across different industries, and acting as a bridge between companies and the Government.
After stepping down from LegCo, I will continue exploring new opportunities and actively participate in initiatives that benefit Hong Kong’s economic and industrial growth. This includes working alongside the business community, representing their interests and serving Hong Kong through various capacities on different platforms.
