Sporting Success

This year, Hong Kong’s tourism sector tells a compelling story of resilience and renewed success, as the city reasserts itself as a vibrant, globally connected destination.

Visitor numbers mirror this momentum, with over 36 million arrivals in the first three quarters of 2025, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. These numbers speak to the success of targeted efforts to showcase Hong Kong’s unique energy and world-class experiences.

One of the most influential drivers behind this surge was the 15th National Games, co-hosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau. The Games became a catalyst for economic activity, breathing life into sectors that have faced persistent challenges. Retail and food & beverage (F&B) businesses, in particular, saw a welcome boost as visitors flocked to the city. Shopping centres near event venues reported higher weekday footfall, while restaurants enjoyed a noticeable uptick in revenue. Malls across Hong Kong amplified the excitement, live-streaming competitions and hosting themed promotions, resulting in a festive atmosphere that encouraged both local and tourist spending.

Beyond the immediate economic gains, the National Games have reinforced Hong Kong’s position as an international sports hub. This progress is backed by significant investment: over HK$9 billion has been allocated for sports development this fiscal year, more than double the amount a decade ago. Complementing this is the Government’s “M” Mark initiative, which continues to attract major international events such as the Hong Kong Sevens and the Hong Kong Football Festival 2025. Venues such as Kai Tak Sports Park demonstrate the city’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and capacity to host world-class events.

The Games have also played a strategic role in deepening integration with the Chinese Mainland, particularly within the Greater Bay Area. Cross-border events such as the marathons and cycling races that spanned Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong highlighted the region’s connectivity and collaborative potential. These events demonstrated logistical excellence and a shared vision for regional development while encouraging people-to-people exchange.

From a business perspective, this convergence of tourism, sports and regional integration presents a compelling model for future growth. Hong Kong’s ability to host high-calibre events, attract international visitors and foster cross-border collaboration will be key to sustaining its economic recovery and enhancing its global standing.

The success of the National Games offers valuable lessons in how strategic partnerships and targeted investments can reinvigorate struggling sectors, boost morale and reaffirm Hong Kong’s role as a dynamic world city.
