Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can be fatal. To spread awareness about the importance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in such an emergency, the Fire Services Department and HKGCC organized a first-aid training workshop on 28 August.

Welcoming the participants, Chamber CEO Patrick Yeung said: “The Fire Services Department proactively organizes various events to teach the public essential first-aid skills in dealing with cardiac arrest, so that people can act properly and quickly within the golden time for emergency rescue.” He hoped that after grasping the basic skills participants would help create a safer community.

Fires Services Director Andy Yeung Yan-kin underlined the importance of more people learning resuscitation skills. “In 2022, sudden cardiac arrest affected some 10,000 people in Hong Kong – or 30 people per day – which is a significant number,” he said.

HKGCC LegCo Representative Jeffrey Lam as well as Deputy Director of Fire Services (Operations) Wong Chun-yip and his team – with Fire Services mascot "Anyone" – also attended the event, which included a detailed introduction to the CPR and AED course.

Around 50 Chamber members and staff learned how to perform CPR on training dummies and earned certificates of attendance at the end of the workshop.

As well as offering the “Press to Shock – Save a Life” CPR & AED Course for free, the Fire Services Department also provides online learning resources about first-aid protocol to the public.
