Youth employment has been a major casualty of the economic downturn hitting Hong Kong over the past two years, as a result of the social unrest, U.S.-China trade tensions and then the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic in particular has driven the local unemployment rate to reach a recent high of 7% in early 2021, with an even higher rate of around 11% for younger people. This situation is worrying, as a seriously high youth unemployment problem is recognized as leading to social repercussions if it continues for a prolonged period.

To get a better understanding of the situation, the Hong Kong Guangdong Youth Association, together with the University of Hong Kong and Proactive Think Tank Limited, conducted a survey on Hong Kong Youth Employment and Greater Bay Area (GBA) Development from September to October 2020. This is the third year that the survey was carried out and the Hong Kong Youth Employment and Greater Bay Area Development Index was produced.

In this recent survey, they performed a more comprehensive research into young people's employment outlook and views on Hong Kong's economic prospects. The Association put together a range of policy suggestions for the Government to consider based on the results of their survey.

The Chamber Young Executives Club (YEC) is delighted to present a webinar on 31 March for members to learn more about the survey and issues relating to youth employment. Ken Ng, Senior Executive of the Hong Kong Guangdong Youth Association, will brief us on the findings of the Hong Kong Youth Employment and Greater Bay Area Development Index 2020. A panel discussion will follow, with Ken and Gordon Lam, Chairman, Sinofuture Group Ltd and Vice Chairman, Hong Kong Guangdong Youth Association, explaining policy suggestions prompted by the survey and sharing their insights on how young entrepreneurs can tap the opportunities in the GBA. They will also be joined by Shawn Chen, Director, Strategy, Coordination & Execution of UMP Healthcare China Limited, who will share her experience of working in the GBA as a young executive.
