Innovating Through Global Partnerships

Hong Kong is rapidly emerging as a reputable innovation and technology (I&T) hub. The Global Innovation Index 2024 once again ranked the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster as the world’s second-leading science and technology hub – a position it has held for five consecutive years.

To accelerate this growth, the Government is investing in key initiatives such as the InnoHK research clusters and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park, as well as expanding R&D funding. These efforts aim to combine finance with cutting-edge innovation, driving sustainable economic advancement and solidifying Hong Kong’s status as a global I&T powerhouse.

As trends in digitalization, AI and green technologies reshape industries, Hong Kong is well-positioned to gain a competitive edge due to its top-tier research institutions and strong connections with the Mainland. Furthermore, the Northern Metropolis development will enhance its role in the Greater Bay Area’s manufacturing and supply chain, further solidifying Hong Kong as a key player in global tech collaboration.

In tandem with Hong Kong’s I&T aspirations, the Chamber recently organized a mission to Germany and France, renowned as two of Europe’s leading industrial and technological powers. The trip, a collaboration with the Hong Kong Productivity Council, successfully explored cutting-edge advancements in industry, innovation and technology while forging stronger ties with the European Union.

In Germany, the delegation’s visit to Hannover Messe underscored its position as the world’s foremost industrial technology expo, showcasing advancements in AI-driven automation, robotics, and smart manufacturing. It also highlighted the rapid evolution and transformative potential of Industry 4.0. Visits to leading companies such as Volkswagen AG and ZEISS were revelatory, demonstrating how smart manufacturing and precision metrology are reshaping production processes and enhancing productivity.

In France, the focus was on Lille, home to a dynamic start-up ecosystem within the Haut-de-France region. Recognized as one of Europe’s 10 most attractive economic areas, Lille’s thriving sectors – including health, food, digital industries and e-commerce – demonstrate robust local entrepreneurship and an environment conducive to innovation and investment.

Overall, the mission underscored a broader narrative of technological evolution and economic diversification in Europe during this era of trade wars and geopolitical tensions. It also fostered new links with local organizations, research centres and companies, aligning with the Chamber’s aim of enhancing our international connectivity. Expanding existing networks is critical as Hong Kong continues to attract global talent and investment.

The Chamber will continue to spearhead such missions, ensuring that Hong Kong not only keeps pace with global innovation but also helps shape it. Our collective goal is to build a technologically empowered city where business and innovation thrive. The future is being written now, and Hong Kong must be at the forefront.
