Edmond Yue was the team leader for Hong Kong’s delegation at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Drawing on his vast business experience and love for sports, Edmond Yue, Director of Wo Hing Construction Company Limited, engaged in a lively chat with members on 24 September.

After earning his master’s degree in the United States, Yue joined the family business in Hong Kong in 1993. Over the past three decades, Wo Hing Construction has managed to thrive in a rapidly changing market by diversifying its offerings. “We have diversified horizontally into different product categories,” he explained. “Today, we engage in everything from waterworks and property development to civil engineering and services.”

Yue emphasized the challenge of attracting young talent to the construction sector, highlighting its appeal through ongoing developments in Hong Kong, especially the ambitious Northern Metropolis project, which is set to transform the landscape and economy.

An avid sports enthusiast, Yue said his passion is deeply rooted in his family. “My family has a sports mindset. It’s a hobby and tradition that brings us together. My father played with Rong Guotuan, China’s first world table tennis champion, and I represented Hong Kong as a player in 1979,” he revealed.

Yue underlined the profound impact of sports on community well-being. “For a city to be successful, its residents must be happy. As Asia’s world city, Hong Kong is a dynamic place, and sports play a vital role in fostering this happiness and unity.”

While celebrating the historic achievements of Hong Kong athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris, Yue expressed concern over the ongoing issue of inadequate funding and resources for the sports sector. He hoped the Government would continue to significantly invest in initiatives like the new Kai Tak stadium to ensure the sector’s growth and success.

With over 30 years as an HKGCC member, Yue has taken on various leadership roles, including in the Industrial and Technology, China, and Membership Committees. He also serves as the Convenor of the Belt and Road Working Group.

He emphasized the Chamber’s vast resources and expertise available to members. “HKGCC is a crucial barometer of Hong Kong’s economy, offering insightful surveys and forecasts to help navigate the ever-evolving business landscape,” he said, urging members to leverage these invaluable tools for growth.
