In the latest instalment of our dialogue series with Chamber GC members, former HKGCC Chairman Dr Y K Pang shared engaging personal anecdotes, and revealed the strategies and mindset needed for success as he reminisced about his four-decade career with Jardine Matheson.
Pang said he enjoyed his long years with the company, from developing business to supporting colleagues and serving customers. He also pointed out that corporations in Hong Kong should embrace ESG practices and foster a culture of responsibility, which will benefit the environment as well as stakeholders.
Reminiscing about his tenure as HKGCC Chairman, he said it was a challenging time due to the Occupy Central movement, during which he reiterated the need for commercial activities to run smoothly, as the business community depends on the uninterrupted flow of goods and services.
Pang, who currently serves as Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, explained that while Hong Kong lost a lot of momentum during the pandemic, the city remains as competitive as ever. Singling out Hong Kong International Airport as an example of efficiency and quality service, he said the airport ranked among the best especially in comparison to Singapore’s Changi Airport, with swift baggage handling times and efficient immigration practices.
He also said Hong Kong is a melting pot of people from different cultures who have made the city their home and are proud to call themselves “Hongkongers.” He added that Hong Kong would always have plenty of room for everyone, thanks to its multicultural and welcoming nature.
As a successful city and leading financial hub, Hong Kong offers an excellent environment for talent to thrive, especially young people, who must seize every opportunity that comes their way. Whether in traditional jobs like medicine and law, or in the creative arts or even entrepreneurship, it is important to pursue one’s passion and think beyond making money. This is the right way to excel in one’s chosen profession and find success, he said.
