The U.S.-China trade war has created massive challenges for many Asian economies, and may have been contributing to a looming global recession. This challenging backdrop has galvanized the work of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) as it prepares for the annual Leaders' Meeting in Santiago to be held in Chile in November.

Hong Kong's business leaders have actively involved in shaping APEC's agenda, not only in defending a rule-based international trade and investment system, and against rising protectionism, but also in more specific areas, like improving channels for cross-border business dispute settlement, and building the "circular economy" in Asia.

David Dodwell, who heads the Hong Kong-APEC Trade Policy Group and supports Hong Kong businesses' inputs into APEC, will talk in a Chamber roundtable luncheon on 18 October about the recent setbacks that have put in doubt the economic progress made in Asia over the past four decades, and what is being done in APEC to reverse them as Chile prepares to pass the baton of APEC Chairmanship to Malaysia.
