Challenges Faced by Retail Industry and Best Practices Sharing

During the committee meeting on 13 August 2025, Mrs Annie Yau Tse, Chairman of Hong Kong Retail Management Association, provided members with an overview of the recent challenges faced by Hong Kong’s retail industry, and Mr Darren Chan, Managing Director of Wellcome Co Ltd, shared with members the best practices adopted by his company for managing difficult times.

Mrs Tse explored the factors that accounted for the decline in Hong Kong’s Retail Sales Value (RSV) in the first half of 2025 and forecasted a mild growth benefited from the mega events held in the second half of the year. To maintain its international standing, Hong Kong must differentiate itself from other Mainland cities and attract high spending visitors from overseas. Mr Chan discussed the strategies applied by his company in response to market changes, such as constantly maintaining a lower price level against key competitors, offering exclusivity by leveraging its own brand, and fulfilling customers’ needs at all times in every format.

In view of the significant challenges faced by Hong Kong’s retail sector, including declining sales, changing consumer behavior, and high operating costs, the latest updates and insights gained from this meeting will be valuable in helping members overcome the difficult situation.

Elections for committee leadership roles were held during the meeting. Ms Tammy Wu returned as Chairman and Mr Song Hoi See and Ms Bella Chhoa returned as Vice Chairmen. The third Vice Chairman Mr Alan Lo was also elected during the meeting.

Sogo Twins Tower 1 in Kai Tak

At the committee meeting on 27 February 2025, members engaged in an in-depth discussion on the 2025 year plan and the newly announced budget by the Financial Secretary. As part of the meeting, we had the opportunity to visit Sogo Twins Tower 1 in Kai Tak, where Ms Kamshim Lau provided valuable insights into the vision behind the Twin Project. A key highlight was The TT Site, a multi-purpose venue designed to host diverse events, enriching the cultural and social vibrancy of the community.

Ms Lau also introduced Tower II, an innovative platform dedicated to fostering the next generation of retail and community engagement, with a strong focus on youth, culture, and contemporary trends. The tour concluded with an exclusive look at the tower’s unique retail concept, where each floor is curated around a specific shopping theme, complemented by ample resting corners to enhance the visitor experience. Exciting times ahead as this project aligns with the city’s broader initiatives to stimulate economic and social development!
