Xia Baolong Outlines New Growth Opportunities in the Changing Business Landscape

For Immediate Release

Hong Kong’s senior business leaders shared their views on economic development at the Hong Kong Business Leaders Symposium 2024, held in Shenzhen last week. Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) Chairman Agnes Chan said it was a productive discussion on how to leverage the business community’s expertise to craft policies and reforms for economic growth.

The symposium was hosted by Xia Baolong, Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, who put forward a number of proposals for Hong Kong's business community. He also emphasized the need to embrace change, fully leverage the advantages of “One Country, Two Systems,” and expand Hong Kong's status as an international financial, logistics and trade hub. He also urged entrepreneurs to explore new industries and business models to diversify Hong Kong’s economy and cultivate new economic drivers.

After the meeting, Chan said: “The discussions underscore the Central Government’s strong commitment to Hong Kong's development and well-being, which are closely linked to the nation’s progress.” In light of the evolving global economic landscape, it is essential for Hong Kong to seek new opportunities for growth. “We must enhance our status as a premier maritime and aviation hub, as well as a vital land gateway to the Mainland. These efforts will contribute to the broader development of the country,” she added.

HKGCC will continue to engage with stakeholders both internally and externally. Externally, it will utilize its international connections and organize overseas missions, visits and talks to promote Hong Kong.

“Internally, as the voice of business, the Chamber will provide advice and suggestions to the Government,” said Chan. “We will also offer businesses professional transformation agendas to help raise their competencies in AI, automation and supply chains. These will help the workforce smoothly dovetail with the new economy. This should give new momentum to economic growth for Hong Kong, the Mainland and the region.”
