Raise in Duty-Free Allowances for Mainland Visitors Welcomed

For Immediate Release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) welcomes the Central Government’s announcement today to raise the duty-free shopping allowance for Mainland visitors to Hong Kong and Macau to 12,000 yuan — and an additional 3,000 yuan for purchases at duty-free stores at border crossings — per trip starting 1 July.

The increase over the current 5,000 yuan for visitors will benefit both Mainland tourists and Hong Kong’s retail sector. The measure, which will initially be implemented at six border crossings and fully implemented beginning 1 August, is expected to give Hong Kong’s retail industry a shot in the arm.

As Mainland visitors make up around 75% of all visitors to Hong Kong, the measure should have a significant impact on related businesses and the economy. It will hopefully also encourage big-spending visitors to loosen their purse strings. The Government estimates it could raise shopping receipts by as much as HK$17 billion annually.
