Chamber Denounces Attacks on Hong Kong’s Judicial Independence

For Immediate Release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce denounces attempts by some lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to introduce a bill to sanction 49 HKSAR officials, judges and prosecutors who safeguard national security.

The rule of law is the cornerstone on which Hong Kong, citizens and businesses can thrive. This is backed by an independent judiciary which is protected under the Basic Law and guarantees judges be free of any interference.

Hong Kong’s judicial system has been widely recognized and respected by the international community. It is also a key driver of our business-friendly environment. The Chamber believes that this proposal by some U.S. politicians aims to sabotage Hong Kong’s judicial independence as it directly interferes in the internal affairs of the city. They are also jeopardizing the interests of all businesses, local and foreign alike. We strongly denounce such manipulation and cannot stress enough how totally unacceptable such attempts are to the business community.
