In February 1978 we took an in-depth look at Singapore’s economy, comparing the similarities and differences with Hong Kong. The phrase “rugged society” had been coined by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in the 1960s to encourage the development of a disciplined and united community of Singaporeans.
