Chairman's Desk
160 Years Young

Here at HKGCC we often say we are the most international as well as the most local chamber in Hong Kong.

Looking back over the past 160 years, we have stayed true to our purpose of bringing the business community together, representing its interests to government, and helping members connect with global opportunities.

Over our journey, we have developed into a truly international chamber, with today’s 4,000-odd members coming from 42 countries and jurisdictions. Attending our events, you will no doubt meet fellow members from all over the world. We also help members connect with visiting overseas business people and officials, as well the opportunity to join our missions to explore new markets.

Lobbying on our members’ behalf, and for the improvement of Hong Kong to benefit all citizens, has always been a crucial part of our work. In 1863, for example, we successfully argued against a bill that would have forced ships to carry mail without compensation. And with safety in mind, in 1872 we campaigned for the introduction of better lighting at the harbour.

In modern times, our lobbying success to establish the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), which was signed in 2003, has enabled Hong Kong businesses to access the tremendous opportunities emerging across the border.

This past year, our role as the Voice of Business, has ensured that your concerns were heard by the Government amid the coronavirus outbreak, resulting in urgently needed support for local businesses, particularly SMEs, to stay afloat during this unprecedented crisis.

Looking to the future, with Asian nations driving global growth, Hong Kong’s role as a global commerce hub is only going to strengthen. HKGCC will continue to work on your behalf and focus our efforts on maintaining Hong Kong’s crown as the best place in the world to do business.

We are proud of the Chamber’s many achievements over the past 160 years. You can read more about these and the Chamber’s work in this special edition of The Bulletin. We look forward to helping you find new opportunities and to work on your behalf to ensure that Hong Kong remains a premier international business centre for many more years to come.
