China Committee
Jin Yan, Deputy Director of the Social Work Department of the Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee for New Social Strata, visited the Chamber on 23 September. She was received by Felix Lee, Chairman of the China Committee.
Jin offered insights into Ningbo’s economic development, describing the city as both stable and understated. As one of China’s major port cities, Ningbo plays a vital role in global trade through its thriving port economy. She noted that the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has consistently ranked first worldwide in cargo throughput, and emphasized that manufacturing remains the backbone of Ningbo’s economy. She also discussed the city’s success in attracting investment, crediting a combination of aligned national policies, targeted local initiatives and the strengths of the Ningbo diaspora and business-friendly environment.
Jin added that internationalization is not only about going global, but also about bringing in foreign investment and fostering meaningful partnerships.
Vikky Tam, Vice Chairman of the SME Committee and members attended the Global Business Summit on 29-30 September, organized by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
At the China Roundtable Luncheon on 10 October, experts from PwC shared their insights into China’s newly released Value-Added Tax Law.
Ivy Peng, Partner, Tax and Business Advisory Services, PwC Hong Kong, and Catherine Tsang, Partner, China Tax and Business Advisory, PwC China, addressed the key changes introduced in the new law, which comes into effect on 1 January 2026. Besides industry-specific challenges and proposed strategies under the new regime, they also discussed common practical issues in tax implementation, providing valuable guidance for businesses preparing for the upcoming reforms.
Deng Yunfeng, Director of the United Front Work Department of Shandong Province, visited the Chamber on 14 October. The delegation was warmly received by Chamber Chairman Agnes Chan and Felix Lee, Chairman of the China Committee.
Deng highlighted Shandong’s impressive economic footprint – it ranks third nationwide with a GDP of RMB 5 trillion and a population of over 100 million. With an annual grain output surpassing 100 billion kilograms and a stronghold in agricultural machinery, Shandong stands out as one of the Chinese Mainland’s most dynamic industrial hubs.
Additionally, Deng highlighted the province’s forward-looking strategy to accelerate growth in high-end manufacturing and the marine economy, fuelling its drive toward high-quality development.
Shandong’s biomedical sector is also flourishing, reaching RMB 680 billion in 2024. The two sides discussed Hong Kong’s unique role as a launchpad for these enterprises to go global, with the development of the Northern Metropolis bringing exciting prospects for regional integration and industrial transformation.
Edmond Yew, Vice Chairman of the China Committee, represented the Chamber at the opening ceremony of the 138th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) on 14 October. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
With an exhibition area of 1.55 million square metres, the 2025 Canton Fair featured over 74,600 booths and more than 32,000 participating enterprises, breaking all previous records. About 3,600 companies made their debut at the fair this year.

Petrina Tam, Convenor of the GBA Working Group, attended the 2025 GBA Brand Excellence Awards hosted by the Hong Kong Economic Journal on 16 October, serving as an officiating guest and presenting awards to the winners.
