Setting the Stage for Hong Kong to Shine

The Chamber’s flagship event held in November, the International Business Summit, was charged with energy and excitement from start to finish. The timely theme, “Shifting Economic Center of Gravity: Hong Kong’s Role,” explored how our city can navigate the changing global economic landscape. It was clear from the outset that this gathering was a crucial platform for driving dialogue and fostering innovation.

Chamber Chairman Agnes Chan delivered an inspiring opening address, reflecting on 30 years of progress since the inaugural business summit. Her words served as a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come. She emphasized our ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving economic and political landscape, highlighting the crucial role of technology and innovation in Hong Kong’s future.

A standout moment was Financial Secretary Paul Chan’s assertion that Hong Kong will thrive despite obstacles and maintain its competitive edge in a multi-polar world. Against the backdrop of global conflicts and U.S. President Donald Trump’s promise to impose higher tariffs on China, his remarks reaffirmed Hong Kong’s capacity to attract investment and pursue economic stability.

Chief Executive John Lee echoed these sentiments in his keynote address, proudly highlighting Hong Kong’s ranking as the world’s freest economy in 2024. He emphasized the city’s status as a coveted hub for both international and local businesses seeking growth opportunities.

Experts and industry leaders on the panel “ASEAN and Middle East: New Engines for Global Growth” provided an insightful, layered perspective on Hong Kong’s unique role as a bridge connecting Asia, China, and the world. The discussion vividly highlighted Hong Kong’s position as a super-connector between emerging and established markets as businesses increasingly seek diversification and explore fast-growing industries in new regions.

The second session was absorbing as it explored how technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data are revolutionizing the world across sectors from education to biotechnology. The discussion also highlighted the urgent need for workforce reskilling, the establishment of regulatory frameworks and the importance of utilizing technology responsibly for sustainable growth.

Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council, wrapped up the day with a warm fireside chat with former HKGCC Chairman Y.K. Pang, sharing his perspective on how European governments and businesses view emerging economies in the Middle East and ASEAN. His personal stories added depth to the discussion, resonating with everyone in the room.

Overall, the summit was a powerful affirmation of Hong Kong’s ability to navigate the complexities of the global economy. The Chamber will continue to actively foster innovation and collaboration internationally to ensure that our city remains a pivotal player on the global stage.
