What's On

Email fraud is a growing problem worldwide and the opportunities for fraudsters are even more abundant in the post-Covid world as a result of the shift to remote working. According to local media, the amount of money intercepted in 2019 by the Hong Kong Police conned from victims of local and global internet and phone scams increased by 150% compared to the previous year. Long gone are the days of poorly drafted emails asserting that you stand to inherit millions from a recently deceased long-lost uncle, fraudsters have since evolved into extremely sophisticated players.

For this webinar, we are delighted to have invited Mr. Pryderi Diebschlag, Senior Associate at MinterEllison LLP, to share his views on how businesses can safeguard themselves from falling victim to fraudulent emails, and mitigate the situation in the unfortunate event that it occurs.

This talk is intended to provide legal and compliance teams with a better understanding of the immediate and long-term practical steps required for optimising the chances of recovering funds lost through fraudulent schemes, as well as a refresher on the urgent interlocutory applications which can be made through the Hong Kong courts.

Speaker(s)

Pryderi Diebschlag, Senior Associate, MinterEllison LLP

Pryderi Diebschlag is a Senior Associate in the Disputes, Competition & Insurance team at MinterEllison LLP in Hong Kong. His practice focuses on commercial disputes, including international arbitration and litigation in the Hong Kong courts. While much of his work is concentrated on the energy and commodities sector, where he has represented clients in UNCITRAL, LCIA, LMAA, SIAC and HKIAC arbitrations, he has a growing practice in the field of the sale of goods, shareholder disputes and, increasingly, email frauds. He has successfully represented the victims of numerous email frauds, ranging in size from many millions of Hong Kong dollars down to rather modest sums. As a result of spending time in-house at an oil major, a "big 4" professional services firm and a major commodities trader, Pryderi has an excellent understanding of the pressures faced by in-house legal and compliance teams. He is qualified in Hong Kong and England & Wales.
