Secretary for Justice the Hon Teresa Cheng SC will speak to members at the Chamber's ongoing "Town Hall Forum Series" on 28 September.

Hong Kong's rule of law is widely seen as a cornerstone of our success as an international business hub. Under the principle of "One Country, Two Systems," Hong Kong enjoys an independent judiciary.

The Secretary for Justice will discuss how Hong Kong upholds the rule of law nowadays. She will also talk about how to promote the city as an international legal and dispute resolution services center in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Secretary will also be happy to answer questions, such as legal policy in respect of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Greater Bay Area.

Speaker(s) Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, was appointed Secretary for Justice on January 6, 2018. She was a Senior Counsel in private practice before joining the Government. She is also a chartered engineer, chartered arbitrator and accredited mediator. She has frequently acted as arbitrator or counsel in complex international commercial and investment disputes.

Ms Cheng was one of the founders and Chairman of the Asian Academy of International Law. She is a Past Vice President of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration and also of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, and Past Chairperson of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. In 2008, she became the first Asian woman elected through a global election to become President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She served as Deputy Judge / Recorder in the Court of First Instance of the High Court of Hong Kong from 2011 to 2017. She is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, and was a member of the World Bank's Sanctions Board.

Ms Cheng is a Fellow of King's College in London, and was Course Director of the International Arbitration and Dispute Settlement course at the Law School of Tsinghua University in Beijing.

- Substitution is allowed for corporate members only with advanced notice while walk-ins will normally not be accepted.

- There will be no refund for attendees cancelling or not showing up for the event unless the cancellation request is made in writing at least 5 days before the event, and in such cases the refund will be subjected to a 10% administration fee, or HK$100 deduction, whichever is higher.
