Visit to the Hong Kong International Airport

Ms Vivian Cheung, Executive Director, Airport Operations of the Airport Authority, hosted a 20-member delegation, which paid a visit to the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 22 June 2022. Members were briefed on the latest developments at HKIA notably plans to transform it from a “City Airport” to an “Airport City”. The centrepiece of such an undertaking was Skycity, one of the largest commercial developments in Hong Kong that would, on completion, play host to a broad range of retail, food and beverage, and entertainment facilities, as well as hotels and offices. Members also received updates on progress with the construction of the third runway, measures to strengthen connectivity with the Greater Bay Area, and the use of technology in airport operations.

On an exclusive visit to Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 13 June, members were given access to the Apron to see the latest developments with the three-runway system and expansion of Terminal One. The delegation then visited the Innovation Lab, which showcases some of HKIA’s latest technological initiatives, including a self-service departure gateway that uses facial recognition technology, and a patrol robot. Members had the opportunity to try out these advanced technologies and see them in action. Smart Airport: New Technologies to Serve Passengers

Chris Au Young, General Manager, Smart Airport, Airport Authority Hong Kong, briefed members on the progress of the “Smart Airport Initiatives” at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at a Chamber roundtable on 29 May. Some of the latest applications include facial recognition in the terminals, patrol robots, trolley recirculation and automated self-check-in counters. He also introduced the “HKG My Flight” app, which uses augmented reality to provide navigation and signage translation, and the “My Tag” baggage label that alerts passengers when their luggage is ready for collection. Au Young pointed out that these developments were necessary to maintain and improve the airport’s high standards of service. The Airport Authority welcomes innovative ideas and has worked with hundreds of start-ups to ensure it has access to cutting-edge technology, he said. HKIA Innovation Lab was also set up to facilitate the different parties working together, Au Young explained, adding that only with such collaborative efforts will HKIA become a smarter airport. HKIA ranked third in international passenger traffic numbers last year, and has been first in cargo traffic for the past consecutive nine years.

Visit to the Hong Kong International Airport

Having a smart airport is a vital part of Hong Kong’s plan to become a smart city. The Chamber’s Shipping and Transport Committee organized a tour for members to Hong Kong International Airport to see how the Airport Authority is bringing the vision of smart operation into reality. Representative of Airport Authority Hong Kong explained the latest developments of the Three Runway System and other initiatives to improve operational efficiency and enhance users’ experience. These include augmented reality signage, and a high-tech RFID luggage-handling and trolley-tracking system. Members also enjoyed the opportunity to tour the Integrated Airport Centre and the airfield, followed by a visit to the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy, which was established in 2016 to train aviation professionals in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific. Representative of Airport Authority Hong Kong introduced the latest developments and programmes at the Academy.

Visit to the Hong Kong International Airport

With increasing air traffic growth and full capacity of the existing two-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport, the Airport Authority is currently implementing interim measures to expand and upgrade facilities and services before the third runway opens in 2024. Around 25 Chamber members visited the airport on 14 November to gain an insight into the latest developments. Members were briefed on the various initiatives by the Airport Authority and toured the Integrated Airport Centre, Airfield and Midfield Concourse.
