The Chamber hosted a seminar on the implications of Hong Kong’s first Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) licensing regime for Hong Kong businesses and the way forward for the virtual asset industry on 15 February, ahead of the new regime’s implementation in June 2023.

Elizabeth Wong, Director of Licensing and Head of Fintech Unit, Intermediaries at the Securities and Futures Commission, kicked off the event by sharing the key features and strategic direction for the VASP regime. She was then joined by Anthony Ng, CEO of the Hong Kong Virtual Asset Exchange, and Benjamin Quinlan, CEO and Managing Partner of Quinlan & Associates, in a discussion on the opportunities and challenges for the virtual asset industry. Speakers shared their perspectives on such issues as the key considerations for developing a regulatory framework that balances investor protection against a crypto-friendly environment, the prospects of applying virtual assets in the Metaverse and future iterations of the digital space, as well as the potential impact of recent ‘crypto winters’ on the industry
