Digital RMB - Prospects and Challenges
After years of research into a Digital RMB, the Mainland's central bank has been piloting this digital currency in a number of cities, including Shenzhen, since last year. The Digital RMB can be used in the same way as physical currency for transactions in these pilot areas.
At a webinar on 10 June, Kera Kong, Strategic Planner, RMB Business Division, Economics & Strategic Planning Department, Bank of China (Hong Kong), discussed several of the issues on the application and use of the Digital RMB.
Kong also spoke on the internationalization of the Digital RMB and its potential usefulness for Hong Kong businesses. She said that Hong Kong can leverage its trade relationship with Southeast Asia to promote the use of Digital RMB for settlements in cross-border trade and services in the region.
