Hong Kong's National Security Law: What You Need to Know

Three legal experts discussed the details of the National Security Law at a webinar on 15 July, including its impact on Hong Kong's legal and political systems, as well as the city’s status as a global financial centre.

Albert Chen, Professor at the HKU Faculty of Law, shared the background to the introduction of the National Security Law in Hong Kong and its key provisions. He was joined by Thomas So, Partner at Mayer Brown and ex-President of the Law Society, who spoke on how the implementation of the law would affect domestic and international businesses. Jimmy Ma, Barrister-at-Law at Liberty Chambers and former LegCo Legal Advisor, discussed the implications of the law, particularly how it would affect the functioning of the Legislative Council.

The law came into force on 30 June, and since then the Hong Kong SAR Government has introduced changes including the establishment of the Committee for Safeguarding National Security, and the introduction of new police powers.
