Surmounting COVID-19: Chinese Department Stores and Shopping Malls' Approach to Operating in Uncharted Waters

The retail sector globally has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, some malls in Mainland China have come up with interesting ways to attract customers. One shopping mall formed dozens of brand-based WeChat groups to boost sales, while another opted for live-streaming events hosted by social media influencers to promote sales and engage with customers. These are a few of the examples of the online strategies adopted by retailers and mall operators in China to overcome social distancing restrictions that were cited by Teresa Lam and Yvonne Mok, respectively Vice President and Senior Research Manager of Fung Business Intelligence, at a webinar on 28 April. The speakers also suggested that tech-savvy retailers were more likely to survive and thrive in the post-outbreak retail environment.
