Visit to the Western Salt Water Service Reservoirs in Rock Caverns

Land shortage is a major issue for Hong Kong, but the Western Salt Water Service Reservoirs in Pokfulam is a great example of innovative solutions in action. The HK$500 million facility provides an sustainable and environmental friendly solution to repurposing land while retaining key utility services. The reservoirs are the first of their kind to be built in rock caverns. During a Chamber tour on 18 September, members visited the a 65-metre tunnel deep in the heart of the rock caverns where the storage facility is located. Assistant Waterworks Inspector Liu Wai-hong explained to members how the award-winning structure has optimised land use by providing storage for 12,000 cubic metres of salt water that is used for flushing to households on Hong Kong Island.
