Uniform Rules of Trade: Should Hong Kong Adopt the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods ("CISG")?
The United Nations Convention for the International Sales of Goods (CISG) came into effect in 1989, and aims to provide uniform rules to govern contracts for international sales of goods, and to promote a level playing field for world trade. While the Chinese Mainland is a Contracting Party to the CISG, the convention is currently not applicable to Hong Kong.
At a webinar on 29 April, Peter Wong and Katie Kwong from the Treaties and Law Unit of the International Law Division at the Department of Justice shared their views on the impact that adopting CISG would have on Hong Kong’s status as an international business hub. They covered areas such as the salient features of the CISG, the interplay between the CISG and relevant Hong Kong laws, as well as the economic and legal considerations for applying the CISG to Hong Kong.
