Mid-Stream Surcharge

7 December 2001

Mr James Shuen
Secretary
Hong Kong Mid-stream Operators Association

Dear Mr Shuen

Mid-Stream Surcharge

It may interest you to know that members of the China-Hong Kong Transport Joint Committee representing container drivers approached this Chamber recently on the issue of Mid-Stream Surcharge.

We were given to understand that the drivers would like to settle the matter in an amicable manner, quickly and decisively and have reason to believe that if this was not suitably addressed, the situation may deteriorate gravely hurting Hong Kong's image overseas.

The Chamber supports a level-headed approach to resolving the current impasse on the cargo-handling surcharge and for the truck drivers to refrain from the sort of industrial action in the past that has resulted in serious inconvenience to the travelling public as well as major economic loss. We urge all sides to get together and to adopt a practical and sensible approach in discussions so that the issue can be resolved to the satisfaction of those concerned.

I am sure that you will agree that failure to resolve the dispute soon could lead to markets being lost overseas at a time of great international competition.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher Cheng
Chairman
