Driving Hong Kong Forward

Did you know that since Uber’s launch in Hong Kong in 2014, 3.6 million residents have collectively travelled over 1.44 billion kilometres? That’s a distance greater than the trip to Saturn and back!

Since its founding in 2010, the company has redefined urban mobility, transforming the frustration of transportation into a simple, reliable solution that is accessible with a single tap. Today, with over 15 billion trips completed globally, Uber operates in more than 70 countries and 10,000 cities, offering a range of services from budget-friendly rides to premium options tailored to diverse needs.

In 2012, Uber (Asia) Limited was established in Hong Kong – a city that holds special significance for the ride-hailing company, as one of its first markets in Asia, said Estyn Chung, General Manager of Uber for Hong Kong.

“Uber is deeply embedded into Hong Kong’s social fabric, from supporting driver partners during the Covid-19 pandemic through its ‘Driver Relief Program’ to partnering with the Children’s Cancer Foundation to fund transportation for young patients,” Chung explained.

At its core, Uber’s mission is to reimagine movement for the better. In Hong Kong, this means providing safe, reliable and convenient rides while supporting the city’s smart city ambitions.

“Trust and opportunity are central to this mission,” said Chung. “Riders rely on Uber for stress-free travel, while drivers gain flexible earning options. This dual benefit has been key to our success, alongside an unwavering focus on safety.”

Every trip in Hong Kong is insured, and features like real-time GPS tracking, anonymized contact details and 24/7 support ensure peace of mind for riders and drivers alike. The company also caters to diverse needs with specialized services, including pet-friendly rides and options for teens and seniors, reflecting its deep understanding of Hong Kong’s unique demands.

While navigating the city’s regulatory landscape and fostering collaboration with the traditional taxi industry has required persistent dialogue, Chung said Uber remains focused on its approach: “Uber + Taxi, Better Together.”

“We believe in the complementary nature of Uber and taxis. However, there have naturally been adjustments and areas of differing perspectives,” said Chung. “We actively engage and learn from their deep local expertise in Hong Kong to find collaborative solutions that allow mutual growth, ultimately benefiting all of Hong Kong's transportation users. Our goal is to bridge the gap and demonstrate how technology can enhance and support the existing transportation ecosystem.”

This commitment highlights collaboration rather than competition, aiming to integrate technology with the existing infrastructure.Digital innovation is central to Uber’s strategy, from refining app functionality to exploring new frontiers, such as Uber Ads and the Uber One membership programme, which rewards loyal users with exclusive perks.

Sustainability is another priority. Uber made a global commitment in 2020 to become a zero-emission mobility platform. The company has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognized body that defines best practices in environmental target setting, underscoring its dedication to environmental responsibility.

By engaging with the Chamber, Uber aims to contribute to pivotal discussions, particularly around e-mobility, innovation and sustainability, ensuring Hong Kong remains at the forefront of smart urban transportation.

Among the Chamber’s offerings, Uber finds its diverse raft of events invaluable. “These gatherings provide opportunities to connect with local businesses and policymakers, fostering partnerships that drive progress,” said Chung. “In a city as dynamic as Hong Kong, such collaborations are essential for shaping a transportation ecosystem that benefits everyone.”

Hong Kong’s status as a global gateway, with tourists from 149 countries using Uber upon arrival, positions it as a critical market.

“We see significant usage from visitors choosing to ride with Uber right from their arrival. Beyond Hong Kong International Airport, key transport hubs like West Kowloon High-Speed Railway Station are also vital connection points,” Chung said. “As we continue to adapt and innovate, our goal remains unchanged: to keep Hong Kong moving forward, one ride at a time.”
