In a world increasingly conscious of health and sustainability, Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd stands as a trailblazer, transforming the humble soybean into a global movement.
Founded in 1940 by Dr. Lo Kwee-Seong, the company began with a mission to address lactose intolerance among Hong Kong’s population by offering affordable, nutritious soy milk.
“What started as door-to-door deliveries has since blossomed into a multinational business, with products reaching consumers in over 40 countries worldwide,” said Anthony Chan, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong.
Yet, beyond its commercial success, Vitasoy remains deeply rooted in its founding principles – nourishing communities, innovating responsibly and fostering connections over generations.
In 1975, the company revolutionized Hong Kong’s beverage industry by introducing Tetra Pak packaging, which enabled soy milk to be stored without refrigeration, thereby increasing accessibility and convenience.
Today, the company’s portfolio is 91% plant-based, encompassing soy milk, tofu, oat milk, almond milk, juices, teas and water. But Vitasoy’s innovation goes beyond product variety.
Guided by its “Vitasoy Nutrition Criteria,” the company ensures its offerings align with dietary recommendations from global health authorities, striking a balance between taste and nutritional benefits. Recent launches, such as VITA™ Zero Sugar Lemon Tea and fruit-flavoured soy milk, reflect its commitment to meeting modern consumer demands.
“We aim to preserve the original flavours and experiences while providing consumers with nutritious, delicious and environmentally responsible plant-based options that are rich in plant protein, unsaturated fats, dietary fibre, as well as calcium and vitamins,” explained Chan.
Sustainability lies at the heart of Vitasoy’s operations. The company’s two-pillar framework, “Making the Right Products” and “Making Products the Right Way,” drives its environmental and social initiatives. From pioneering the recycling of “okara” (soy residue) to experimenting with passive cooling materials for refrigerated trucks in R&D initiatives, Vitasoy consistently seeks ways to minimize waste and energy consumption.
“In Hong Kong, we are piloting solar panels on delivery trucks to enhance energy efficiency. Starting last year, we added signage to our trucks promoting the recycling of beverage containers to raise public awareness and encourage eco-friendly recycling practices,” said Chan. “Our community programmes, such as the Nutrition Exploration Journey, educate students and families on plant-based diets and healthy living.”
Vitasoy also cherishes its role as a cultural touchstone. Chan pointed out how its 2023 “For Me, For You, Vitasoy” campaign, is a continuation of the iconic “Stand By Me” series, reinforcing the brand’s emotional resonance with consumers.
“Over the decades, Vitasoy has positioned itself as more than just a beverage – it is a companion that nourishes both body and spirit,” he said – a sentiment echoed by its global customer base and over 6,000 employees across Hong Kong, the Mainland, Australia, North America, Singapore and the Philippines.
As a Chamber member since 1972, the company has long valued HKGCC for its collaboration, advocacy and industry insights.
Chan said the Chamber’s networking events and resources align with the company’s goals, offering opportunities to engage with like-minded businesses and stay ahead of market trends. “For Vitasoy, membership is not just about growth – it’s about contributing to a broader dialogue on sustainability and responsible business practices.”
Looking ahead, Chan said the company remains steadfast in its mission to innovate while honouring its heritage, whether through expanding its plant-based offerings, refining sustainable packaging or nurturing community ties.
In an era where consumers seek brands with purpose, Vitasoy’s story serves as a reminder of how the simplest idea – such as a carton of soy milk – can symbolize an enduring legacy.
