Show-stopping Success

As you stroll past the bustling Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre (HKCEC) on the Wan Chai Waterfront, it’s almost unimaginable to think of a time when the city lacked its vibrant trade show scene.

Yet, in 1984, the very first Hong Kong Leather Fair took place in a humble car park, marking the beginning of a new era. Interestingly, then HKGCC Director Jimmy McGregor was one of the officiating guests who played a pivotal role in bringing the show to Hong Kong.

Fast forward to 1988, when HKCEC opened its doors and hosted the now-renamed and rapidly growing Asia Pacific Leather Fair (APLF) within its expansive halls. The moment marked a watershed in the city’s exhibition landscape, setting the stage for the renowned events that would follow.

APLF is just one of the standout events under Informa Markets Asia Ltd, a powerhouse in Hong Kong’s conventions and exhibitions (C&E) sector. Formed in 2018 through the merger of Informa’s Asian operations and UBM Asia, the region’s leading exhibition organizer, Informa Markets operates a vast global network, with over 16,000 people employed across 30 countries and various market sectors. As a trailblazer in the B2B arena, it unites buyers and exhibitors from multiple industries, ranging from health, nutrition and beauty to aviation and construction.

The scale is staggering, serving an impressive one million exhibitors, visitors, conference delegates and subscribers globally. This includes busy schedules throughout the Mainland and the Greater Bay Area, extending from Shanghai to Shenzhen, and a vast global reach spanning Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as the Americas.

“Many of our exhibitions have been around for decades and are recognized as leading events in their respective industries, both regionally and globally,” said Michael Duck, Executive Vice President – Commercial Development at Informa Markets. A resident of Hong Kong for over 38 years, Duck has seen firsthand the evolution of the city’s trade show sector, witnessing its transformation into a dynamic hub for international business.

Besides the leather fair, Informa Market’s diverse line-up of shows held at HKCEC and AsiaWorld-Expo include the popular Jewellery and Gem World Hong Kong, Aero-Engines Asia-Pacific and CosmoProf Asia, which attracts beauty professionals keen to explore the latest trends in cosmetics and personal care.

Additionally, HOFEX, Asia’s leading food and hospitality trade exhibition, serves as a vital platform for food and beverage professionals to network and collaborate. And just last month (March), Connect Marketplace Hong Kong made its debut, bringing together thought leaders, innovators and decision-makers to discuss the latest advancements in the MICE industry. Another new event this year is The Battery Show, expanding its footprint to Asia after North America and Europe and a remarkable launch in India.

Duck said the city’s trade show sector, which returned to pre-pandemic growth levels in 2024, is truly international, supported by the “One Country, Two Systems” framework that strengthens the city’s status as a free-trade hub.

He added that Hong Kong stands out as an ideal hub for trade fairs and exhibitions in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Hong Kong is strategically located and offers unparalleled advantages, including low taxation, which fosters a business-friendly environment. The city is renowned for being safe and secure – a big plus for international visitors and exhibitors. Plus, there’s a fantastic pool of talented professionals, ensuring high-quality services and expertise in the exhibition industry. Add to this the outstanding hotels and restaurants, along with excellent air links offering convenient travel connections, all makes an ideal destination for travellers looking to combine business with leisure.”

In 2023, Hong Kong’s total international merchandise trade exceeded HK$8.8 billion, with key trading partners including the Mainland, ASEAN, the European Union and the United States. However, recent tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on imports from various countries, including China, have cast a shadow over the global trade industry. Duck noted that while some exhibitors and suppliers were seeking alternative sourcing options to avoid the high taxes, the long-term consequences of these trade wars remain uncertain.

Informa Markets has proudly been a member of HKGCC since 1980, leveraging the Chamber’s extensive business communications and networking opportunities.

“HKGCC is one of the oldest organizations in Hong Kong. It serves as a powerful catalyst for business growth, helping companies, especially SMEs, thrive and innovate while leveraging these connections for success,” he said.

As an active member of the Chamber’s Asia, Africa & Middle East Committee, Duck has participated in several international missions organized by HKGCC, most recently to Vietnam and Cambodia. “These outreach initiatives are crucial for enhancing Hong Kong’s global reputation. They foster dynamic trade and business partnerships worldwide, aligning with the Government’s strategies for effective market diversification.”

With the city in peak trade show season, the legacy of those pioneering fairs continues to thrive, driving innovation and collaboration as Informa Markets strengthens the exhibition landscape and enhances Hong Kong’s reputation as a key hub for global commerce.
