Company Background

Founded in 1862, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) was Hong Kong's first public utility. Today, Towngas is one of the largest energy suppliers in Hong Kong, operating with world-class corporate management and leading-edge business practices. For the past years, Towngas has been growing with Hong Kong, evolving from the simple gas company supplying fuel for street lamps to our current leading position in the energy industry in the greater China region.

A major reason for its success has been the reputation they have established over the years, enabling them to win the trust of the people of Hong Kong. Towngas'core business in the territory consists of the production and distribution of gas, marketing and sale of gas, the sale of gas appliances, as well as comprehensive after-sales services. With a pipeline network consisting of more than 3,400km of gas pipes, they supply town gas to over 1.7 million customers in Hong Kong. In recent years, the Company has diversified its business into telecommunications, building services, engineering and the new eco-energies, among many others.

Towngas moved into the gas business in mainland China in 1994. Currently, the Company has more than 100 projects, including piped city-gas projects, upstream and midstream developments, water and wastewater treatment schemes, natural gas filling stations, as well as new energy exploration and utilisation ventures, across 19 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout the country.

The Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited was first registered as a company in England in 1862 to provide town gas for the lighting of streets and selected buildings in Hong Kong. Its corporate registration was transferred from England to Hong Kong in 1982 and it is a limited company publicly listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Town gas is produced at the plants in Tai Po and Ma Tau Kok, it is used for cooking, water heating, clothes drying, dehumidification and other purposes. The pipeline network has extended to over 3,400km supplying town gas to more than 1.7 million customers.

The Company provides a comprehensive range of products and services from production and distribution of gas, marketing of gas and appliances, safety audits and maintenance services, to attending gas related emergencies. It has also developed long-term investment gas related business opportunities on the Mainland by establishing over 100 joint-ventures.
