In response to the National People’s Congress’ draft plan to improve Hong Kong‘s electoral system based on the principle of “patriots governing Hong Kong,” the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) recognises the need for change and supports the move, which will help bring long-term stability to Hong Kong.
HKGCC believes that enhancing Hong Kong’s electoral system based on current circumstances would reinforce the "One Country, Two Systems" principle under the spirit of “Hong Kong people running Hong Kong and maintaining our high degree of autonomy.” As anyone taking up public office in any country around the world needs to declare their loyalty to their respective country, including the principle of “patriots ruling Hong Kong” aligns with international norms.
"One Country, Two Systems" has long been the cornerstone of Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong under a high degree of autonomy embodies the spirit of "One Country, Two Systems." HKGCC believes that Hong Kong is perfectly capable of implementing such a system while keeping constitutional order.
