For Immediate Release
Stephen Ng, Chairman and Managing Director of Wharf (Holdings) Limited, has been elected Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce for the coming year, taking over from YK Pang, who retired from the chairmanship after serving for two years.
Upon being elected, Ng said, “I am truly honoured to be the new Chairman of HKGCC. I know there is a huge responsibility that comes with the job, especially during this tough economic climate. I hope I can further strengthen the Chamber’s role as the voice of business in Hong Kong, and also help to bring the community together so that we can all focus on building a brighter and more prosperous Hong Kong for all.”
Despite the often divided opinions in Hong Kong, he hopes the Government, businesses and other stakeholders can find a common ground to give Hong Kong’s ailing economy a badly needed boost and to also improve our international image.
Outgoing Chairman YK Pang, Director of Jardine Matheson and Chief Executive of Hongkong Land, said during his two-year term the Chamber gave constructive proposals to the Government on how it can improve Hong Kong’s business and physical environment. The Chamber also provided practical suggestions on how the Government can nurture the development of young startups and industries, as well as help SMEs survive the economic downturn.
The election was held at the inaugural meeting of the new General Committee immediately after the HKGCC’s Annual General Meeting on the evening of 10 May. Aron Harilela, Chairman & CEO of Hari Harilela Ltd, was elected as Deputy Chairman.
Victor Li, Managing Director & Deputy Chairman of Cheung Kong Property (Holdings) Ltd, was re-elected as Vice Chairman, while Agnes Chan, Managing Partner, Hong Kong & Macao, Ernst & Young; and Peter Wong, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd, were elected as Vice Chairmen.
Former Vice Chairman Betty Yuen, Vice Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, expressed her wish to step down as Vice Chairman, but will continue to serve on the General Committee.
At the Annual General Meeting, members elected a total of six members to fill the seats on the General Committee – the governing body of the Chamber – who were required to step down this year. Five of them were re-elected, including Agnes Chan, Oscar Chow, Allen Fung, Aron Harilela and YK Pang. Yue Yi, Vice Chairman & Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, was newly elected as a General Committee member. Following is an updated list of the General Committee.
