Building Cross-Boundary Elderly Care Ecosystems: Integrating Finance and Care Services Across GBA Cities
The Health and Wellness Working Group hosted a sharing session on 15 June examining how Hong Kong could finance and deliver care for 25–30 years of later life, and the role the Greater Bay Area (GBA) could play in providing practical relief.
Esteemed guests Jacky Man, Assistant Vice President, Product Proposition, Life & Health, Sun Life Hong Kong; Simon Pang, General Manager, General Reinsurance AG, Hong Kong Branch; and Leo Chan, CEO of Hygge Living, examined the "longevity dollar" from the family balance sheet, through risk and the public purse, to the real-world capacity of care operators in Hong Kong and the GBA, while addressing constraints in land and public funding.
Pang drew on his actuarial expertise to highlight the complexities of pricing longevity risk, including factors such as investment returns and medical inflation. Man elaborated on this by noting the common tendency to underestimate life expectancy while overestimating available savings. Cost emerged as a central theme of the discussion, as Chan explored the opportunities available in the GBA relative to Hong Kong, particularly in light of its cost advantage.
Five CityU HK Tech 300 startups also shared how their innovations could support healthier ageing and enable new models of elderly care and silver finance.
