China’s President Xi Jinping announced the proposal of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, which involves over 60 countries and regions and more than half the world’s population, in 2013.

"Belt and Road" consists of two main components - the land-based "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st-Century Maritime Silk Road" – running through the Eurasian continent and along the adjacent sea routes, respectively, connecting the Asia-Pacific economic sphere in the east and the European economic sphere in the west to create a mutually beneficial "community with common interest."
