Time for Hong Kong to Move On

For Immediate Release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) respects Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s sincere apology to the people of Hong Kong over the Government’s handling of the extradition bill.

“The Chief Executive has made a formal apology over the incident. We hope that this will draw a line under this unfortunate episode, and that life in Hong Kong returns to normal as soon as possible,” said HKGCC Chairman Aron Harilela.

The whole world has been watching this chapter in Hong Kong’s history unfolding. It has impacted local businesses and also our reputation among the international business community. We are a resilient city with a strong and well intentioned people. It is time we move on positively.

“Hong Kong has also shown the world its mettle and how we cherish our freedoms and rule of law. That sends a very strong signal that Hong Kong continues to be a free, open, and law abiding society,” added HKGCC CEO Shirley Yuen.

HKGCC acknowledges and appreciates that the Chief Executive has tried her utmost over the past two years to improve people’s livelihoods, advance economic development and raise Hong Kong’s role as a leading business and financial hub.

“Hong Kong has accomplished so much in the past few years. We hope that we have all learned from this experience and that the public, business community and Government refocus their energy into getting our great city and the economy back on track,” concluded Harilela.
