HKGCC Free Ride Day

For immediate release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce will organize its ‘HKGCC Free Ride Day’ on May 29, the date of our establishment in 1861, to show our care for the community. On that day, people will be able to ride on trams and two main Star Ferry routes free of charge.

Following on from the launch of Free Ride Day last year, our slogan will be “this one’s on us.” All members of the public and tourists can enjoy free rides on any tram between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan on May 29. We have also expanded this year’s Free Ride Day to over 100 trams, compared to 15 trams last year. The Star Ferry routes have also been expanded to include crossings between Tsimshatsui and Wanchai, in addition to the Tsimshatsui-Central route.

Anthony Wu, Chairman of HKGCC, explained that the "this one’s on us" campaign not only represents the free rides, but it is also a chance for the Chamber and our members to showcase our concern for the well-being of the entire community. "The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce has contributed to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong for over 150 years,” he said. “The business community does a lot of important work to help less fortunate members of society and we want to highlight that the business community cares about building a prosperous Hong Kong with all members of society."

With strong support from 40 participating and supporting members, Wu expressed his gratitude, in particular to the two media partners, Metro Radio and the Sing Tao Group, including Sing Tao Daily, Headline Daily and The Standard, for their assistance in alerting people about the event.

Chamber CEO Shirley Yuen said that despite the tough economic climate, members were still willing to step up and support the HKGCC Free Ride Day. “We hope that with the enthusiasm of the public, and our members’ support, the event will create a positive buzz in Hong Kong.”

She expects about 300,000 people from all walks of life will benefit from the HKGCC Free Ride Day, and hopes that both locals and tourists will enjoy and remember the Chamber’s 151st birthday.
