HKGCC's View on the Minimum Wage Bill

For Immediate Release

With the passage of the Minimum Wage Bill in the Legislative Council, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce urges the authority to strike a sensible balance between forestalling excessively low wages and minimising the loss of low-paid jobs, while sustaining Hong Kong's economic growth and competitiveness.

The Provisional Minimum Wage Commission will set the initial minimum wage hourly rate and make their proposal to the Chief Executive. The Chamber stresses that setting the rate too high could force more lesser-educated, unskilled and less-experienced workers to lose their jobs. The Commission should introduce an initial minimum wage that serves the interests of different sectors of the community and minimize the impact on vulnerable workers.
