HKGCC's Statement on 2012 Constitutional Reform Proposals

For immediate release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce notes that the HKSAR government has announced today a package of proposals for the electoral arrangements for the selection of the Chief Executive and the elections of legislators in 2012.

The Chamber supports changes in electoral arrangements that are in line with the principle of gradual and orderly progress towards democratic elections as laid down in the Basic Law. The package announced today represents a pragmatic way forward, and is therefore worth supporting. The Chamber, and the business community in general, wants to see progress on political reforms; we do not want to see the process stall.

As mentioned by the government, the community still has diverse views on the issue of the future of functional constituencies. The Chamber welcomes the recommendation of allowing more time to discuss the issue thoroughly and forge consensus.

The Chamber looks forward to seeing the community reach consensus on the electoral arrangements for 2012.
