What's On

This is the ideal session for people who want to finetune the tone of their writing to meet the needs of different audiences, subjects and contexts.

If you've ever been concerned about inadvertently offending your audience in emails or other personal correspondence, then this is the workshop for you.

This workshop will look at:
• the dos and don'ts of email writing
• how relationship, subject and context affect tone including Scollon & Wong Scollon's Cooperative Theory
• the language which can be used to manipulate tone – writing on sensitive issues
• intercultural communication considerations such as the politeness vs formality issue and Grice's Maxims - practicality vs 'fluff'

Learning Outcomes:
This workshop will:
• enable you to consider the effect tone can have on your audience's perception and subsequent reaction
• produce emails that create positive relationships and achieve their goals
• adapt language to suit the situation

Target Audience:
• those who need to write emails on potentially sensitive issues such as apologizing or denying responsibility
• people who would like to brush up on their writing skills, and
• managers who would like some pointers in offering advice to their team members
