Hong Kong: The Endangered Golden Goose of China?
Hong Kong's long-standing role as the gateway between mainland China and the world has come under increasing pressure amid the Sino-American Trade War and the protests in Hong Kong. At a roundtable luncheon on 29 October, Geng Xiao, President of the Hong Kong Institution for International Finance, spoke on ways that Hong Kong could safeguard its position when faced with such prolonged and unprecedented challenges. He believed that Hong Kong's common law system has given it one of the most important strategic competitive advantages. In that connection, Geng felt that there is a compelling need for the goverment to capitalise on this so that the financial system and industry can continue to flourish. He also suggested strategies and approaches to achieve a win-win situation for both Hong Kong and China under the principle of "One Country, Two Systems".
