The Transforming Tourism Economy

While Hong Kong’s tourism industry is currently facing fierce competition from other places, such as Japan, Thailand and Korea, with their more lenient visa policy, incentivized shopping offers, and influential pop cultures, it was very timely for the Retail & Tourism Committee to invite Ms Pansy Ho, Vice Chairman & Secretary-General of the Global Tourism Economy Forum and Managing Director of Shun Tak Holdings Ltd to brief members on the “Transforming Tourism Economy” at the Chamber roundtable luncheon on 23 September.

Ms Ho shared her insights on the impact of new technological innovations and the new burgeoning class of consumers, especially the Mainland Chinese, in global tourism with nearly 90 participants. Mr Stephen Ng, HKGCC Chairman and Ms Shirley Yuen, HKGCC CEO joined the seminar, and Mr Frank Lee, Chairman of Retail & Tourism Committee moderated the session.

Ms Ho’s presentation provided a comprehensive picture of the global tourism landscape, and helped the attendees explore new business opportunities. She wished that Hong Kong and Macau would become a partner to each other, instead of competing against each other.
